Reading, PA – In memory of Berks County native, Christine Buckley-Papada, the Humane Society of Berks County’s sister shelter, the Humane League of Lancaster County (HLLC), will be offering fee waived pet adoptions on Saturday, March 6th, 2021.
Every year Christine’s friends and family generously donate to the shelter in her honor. 2021 marks 10 years since her passing, and despite our Berks shelter being temporarily closed due to construction, her friends and family wanted to do more for animals currently seeking a home. Christine always had a love for animals and supported the Humane Society, among other charities in Berks County, throughout her life.
During the planning of this event, Kirsten Sandel, a dear friend of Christine’s stated…
“Christine Buckley-Papada was the most positive person I have ever met. She was dealt a difficult hand in life, as she had heart valve replacements while she was in junior high school and then again as an adult. Christine never let her medical issues compromise her zest for life.”
Many may remember Christine from her days at Schell’s smiling behind the counter, or her time at Lords and Ladies. She was a volunteer for the American Heart Association and was active in that society in Berks County for years. Christine was a fabulous golfer, a great daughter, a best friend, and a wonderful mom to her beloved Scotty dog, Duffy.
“Christine always loved animals, from her first Scotty dog, Spunky, to her last dog, Duffy. She loved to go to the Pints for Pups event and petted every dog we encountered! It has been almost ten years since we lost Christine, but her thirst for life and her love of animals will always live on in all of us. She definitely left an impression on all of those she touched in her short life.” Sandel stated.
This fee waived adoption day provides families with the ability to welcome a new friend into their home without needing to pay the standard adoption fee. Throughout the weekend, community members can view, select, and meet-and-greet with any animals; dogs, cats, and critters they’d like, that are available for adoption.
Adopters wishing to provide a loving home for a shelter pet are encouraged to visit the shelter or HumanePA.org to learn more about the animals currently available for adoption.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, only 5 people will be allowed in the shelter at a time. A number system will be put in place to keep track of adopters and their respective family members. Masks must also be worn correctly when entering the premises.
All potential adopters during this adoption event are required to go through the same diligent adoption screening process as any other adopter. Once an adoption interest form is approved, the pet adoption fee will be waived.
Waived Adoption Fees Include:
- Humane Pennsylvania’s 30-Day Adoption Health Supplement
- Spaying or Neutering (prior to adoption)
