Wingless Wednesdays at Shellhammer Dirt Track Recap

Great weather and great racing greeted the race teams and fans at Shellhammer Dirt Track on May 19 as 87 entries took to the well prepared 1/8th mile for some racing by the river.

The biggest Wingless Weds. field (17) ever of Jr. Slingshots were the 1st class on the speedway for their A Mains and after 20 laps it was Ryan Rochelle taking the $250 win from his 8th starting place. A late race charge by Tucker Cole would come up a little short as the 44 got 2nd with a fantastic 3rd place finish from 7th starting Parker Hendricks locking him into a podium finish. Hard charger of the race was Louie Horvath who charged from 15th to 7th.

Bobby Kibler,Jr. started the Stage One Modified feature from the pole and after withstanding the challenges of AJ Gerhart in the S1 house car from lap 14 to the checker it was a battle to see who might make the 1st mistake, but neither one did and ran side by side the last 3 laps with Kibler,Jr. getting the win by a scant margin. Gerhart was 2nd and Matt Mertz who got shuffled to the back early in the race ,put it in high gear to corral a 3rd place run.

The 270’s had a stellar 14 car field and this race didn’t disappoint anyone in attendance as 2020 600 micro champion, Richie Hartman, was summoned to pilot the current point leader’s car for the evening and after battling with Alex Reinsmith for a few early laps, got himself clear with a slide job move that stuck in turn 2 and soldiered on for the win with Reinsmith getting a well-run 2nd.

Brandon Shearer entered the top 3 late in the 20 lap feature and held on for the 3rd place money. Dakota Barlet was an early DNF after taking his # 54 for a wild tumble in heat action only to repair his racer and notch the 5th position from his 13th starting spot. Matt Hoffman seems to be in the right place at the right time as he has earned the Race Chasing $25.00 bonus for the 2nd week in a row last night by finishing 6th.

A big shout out to the All Star Slingshots who went the 20 lap distance nonstop in 3:33 with Tyler Hoch never challenged during this race, but the Slingshot show of the night was right behind him as Josh Patterson and Dylan Hoch swapped the 2nd spot at every end of the speedway with Hoch getting the advantage in turns 1 and 2 ,only to have Patterson rebound in turns 3 and 4.Patterson eeked out the 2nd place money over Hoch. With the 2nd place battle attracting attention Dave Carraghan and Zachary Steffey had their own private battle for 4th with Carraghan getting the spot.

Next on the speedway were the 125’s and point leader Cliff Brian, Jr. used his heat win to earn the pole position by way of the heads up starting system used at Shellhammer’s. Cliff took the lead at the drop of Dave Cordier,Jr’s. green and took the victory.

Another battle for the 2nd spot kept the fans interest on the speedway as Marty Brian and AJ Gerhart both used different grooves around the 1/8th mile speedway running only inches apart with Brian staking claim for the 2nd place payout over Gerhart. Picking and choosing his passing areas was Jarrid Hellinger who claimed 4th from his 12th starting position.

Not to be outdone was the 600 micros with 2 of the best to ever suit up in small car competition, Richie Hartman and “Liquid” Lou Cicconi in charge of bringing the field to the green. These 2 greats put on a classic show with slide jobs, side by sides and position swapping with Cicconi taking the top spot 3 times only to have a caution revert the field back to the last completed lap and put Hartman back on the point.

When the checkered was thrown the fans gave these 2 a standing ovation for their efforts on the speedway.

Hunter Metzger used a high line around the speedway for his 3rd place finish and another driver getting quite a few accolades was rookie Geezer Fanelli who found a groove to his liking in coming from his 8th starting spot to finish a career best 4th.2nd place in points Tyler Lindsay had to scratch from the feature due to mechanical issues.
