Album Review: Halfway to Somewhere – Late Night Special

The Context: For all those memory makers, and polaroid lovers, this jazzy-Americana rock group is called Late Nate Special. They are a 5-man band that took risks with their music development during quarantine. Forming in 2012, from Charlotte, North Carolina, this group incorporates the memory making Americana vibes into their jazzy tunes. Fred Lee IV is the lead vocals of the band, but also plays the piano and acoustic guitar. Jamming with the fellow band mates, there’s Mikey on Electric/Bass guitar and backup vocals, Derek on electric guitar, JB on drums, and Jason on keyboards. Each band member has their own musical style, but using their diverse ranges allows the songs to sooth the soul.

Currently touring the country, they appeared on their hometowns Charlottes WBTV Station. They also performed over Labor Day weekend during The Lantern Festival Event at The Pocono Raceway. Debuting with their first album in 2015 Light of The Moon, they soon continued with their second album Halfway to Somewhere which gained a lot more popularity in April of 2020, especially with the song, “Don’t Leave Me Lonely”. Working through quarantine brought out their newest album Dance the Night Away. All of their songs have the quirky aspects of country rock mixed with jazzy folk, creating a John Mayer vs. Foster the People vibe.

The Content: Halfway to Somewhere contains seven tracks of feel-good lyrics that remind the listener to think about where they’ve come from, the homes that they’ve grown from. The song “Don’t Leave Me Lonely” satisfies that summertime feeling of being with friends and family in the time of troubles. It’s a jazzy and catchy beat that gets your feet moving, encouraging listeners with their ancient reverb sound to enjoy life. In person at the festival, Felix’s voice is strong and smooth with an undertone of country rock. These songs just have a fulfilling sound that create happy vibes, that sooth the audience which was perfect for a slow sunset at The Lantern Festival.

The Skinny: Late Night Special allows their quirky and inventive personalities to interfere with their music and audience interactions, creating a comfortable and funny atmosphere for everyone of all ages. Their music painted pictures across the sky with infinite colors, creating euphoric tunes and melodies that everyone enjoyed. This band doesn’t lose energy either, in fact, it seems they gain more energy after every song! These gentlemen have fun on stage and encourage the audience to interact, which creates a better experience for everyone. “Disco” is a great example of this, a song about dancing and just letting go! This album is just a masterpiece of aesthetic memories being made with people you love.
