Spell-Binding Fine Craft Reaches Through Time with Rescued Violins from Holocaust

Art center exhibits Violins of Hope, presented by Reading Symphony Orchestra and Jewish Federation of Reading

GoggleWorks Center for the Arts (GoggleWorks) welcomes the Reading Symphony Orchestra, the Jewish Federation of Reading, Kutztown University, Alvernia University and a coalition of supporting organizations to present Violins of Hope, Instruments for Unity, a project highlighting musical instruments rescued and restored after the Holocaust. The mission of Violins of Hope is to promote unity and understanding in our community, utilizing these unique and empowered artifacts.

“The Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks is proud to collaborate with the Reading Symphony Orchestra to bring to our community the special and unique Violins of Hope program,” said William D. Franklin, President. “By including all segments of our community, we believe the many Violins of Hope programs can teach us how to work together to better understand and fight racism and social injustice.”

At the center of the Violins of Hope is an exhibition of these incredibly significant, fine-crafted violins. The show will be on view from November 1st through 14th in the Rolf & Renate Schmidt Gallery at GoggleWorks. “The RSO and Jewish Federation have brought a world-class project to Reading,” said Levi Landis, Executive Director of GoggleWorks. “The exhibition celebrates our shared human experience, amplifies occluded voices, and presents exceptional craft. The violins are stunning and the public programs bring to life the remarkable stories behind the art.”

In addition to the exhibition, the former goggle factory art center will be one of the many locations hosting more than 30 cultural happenings in connection with the exhibition and its themes, including:
