REALTORS® Deliver Meals On Wheels for Thirty-Sixth Year

November 25, 2021 marks 36 years of Berks County’s Realtors providing Thanksgiving dinner to local seniors.  This service project is a very important tradition for the Association and the Realtors are glad that they are able to continue this project even though the pandemic is still present again this year.

Since 1985, after learning that Berks Encore’s Meals on Wheels program offered meals every day of the year with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas, the Reading-Berks Association of REALTORS® (known as the “Board of Realtors” at the time) stepped in to cook and deliver meals.  They organized a group of volunteers to prepare, package, and deliver meals to those in need on Thanksgiving Day.  During the first year, approximately 20 meals were served. Thanks to generous donations from local businesses and individuals, and the help of many Realtors and their families, approximately 175 meals will be distributed this year.

On Thanksgiving morning, approximately 50 members of the Reading-Berks Association of REALTORS® gather at West Lawn United Methodist Church to volunteer their time to complete the preparation and delivering. For many of them, this is their favorite outreach project that the Association coordinates and members return year after year to participate. For the kitchen volunteers, the work begins at 8:00 am to prepare, package, and deliver the meals to Berks County seniors who are not able to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday with family. For the members who donate turkeys, the day starts in the “wee hours” of the morning in order to deliver a freshly cooked turkey to the church by 8:30am.

This event would not be possible without the generous donation of our members time and for the food donated from the following companies:  Boyer’s Food Markets, Inc., Clover Farms Dairy, Sweet Streets Desserts, and Redner’s Warehouse Markets and the West Lawn United Methodist Church for the use of their facility.

Meals on Wheels serves individuals age 60 and over who are unable to prepare their own meals due to physical limitations and have no family or friends available to assist them.

Schedule for Thursday, Nov. 25th:

8AM – 10AM – Members are preparing and packing meals at the West Lawn United Methodist Church Community Center (this is across the street from the church) in West Lawn, PA.

10AM – 11:00AM – Members are loading up their vehicles and delivering meals around Berks County, PA.
