In February 2021, the Reading Parking Authority, in conjunction with City Council, experimented with expanding the parking meter area beyond the commercial core zoning district. Nathan Matz, Executive Director, said the Authority had received numerous complaints about the parking situation in the commercial core and on North 9th Street.
An evaluation of the issue led to a multi-prong response, including the installation of additional meters to create turnover for businesses, Saturday meter enforcement, the creation of a double-parking enforcement initiative, and engagement with the City of Reading on a parking study that included that area.
After nearly one year of implementation, Mayor Eddie Moran reviewed the data with the Parking Authority and has requested that it remove the meters in the 100, 200, and 300 blocks of North 9th Street.
This request from the Mayor comes on the heels of the Authority’s decision to discontinue enforcement of meters for events. “Although well-intended, the On Street Meter Parking initiative proved to be not financially beneficial to continue given the strains on the Citizens, Visitors, and the Authority,” stated Matz.
The Authority is still evaluating Saturday meter enforcement; however, Matz added that there have been fewer complaints from business owners regarding the availability of parking for their Saturday customers.
