National Donate Life Month a Time to Recognize the Gift of Organ Donation

April is National Donate Life Month, a time to help raise awareness about donation, encourage Americans to register as organ, eye and tissue donors and to honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation, while becoming educated about living donation, and championing the Donate Life cause. BCTV, in coordination with Alvernia University’s COM-240 Public Relations class, will spotlight this life-saving subject with multimedia campaigns that include tips, myth-busters, and local resources throughout the month of April.

Founded as the Coalition on Donation in 1992 by the donation and transplantation community, Donate Life America changed its name in 2006 in response to extensive research and the desire to align the organization with the Donate Life brand. Over the past 30 years, Donate Life America and the Donate Life Community have registered 170 Million organ, eye and tissue donors in the United States.

The month of April is filled with donation observances and events, including National Donate Life Blue & Green Day on April 22, when the public is encouraged to wear blue and green and to engage in sharing the Donate Life message and promoting the importance of registering as an organ, eye and tissue donor.

In addition to Alvernia’s Public Relations class campaigns and promotions for organ donation awareness, BCTV will also be airing programming about organ donation, including the special program series ‘Gifts of Humanity’ hosted by volunteer program producer and heart transplant recipient, Elaine McDevitt. In the series, McDevitt interviews guests that have been a part of the organ donation cycle from multiple vantage points including recipients, donors, and advocates.

According to Donate Life America, one organ, eye and tissue donor can save and heal more than 75 lives, and more than 100,000 people are waiting for a lifesaving transplant.

BCTV is launching new campaigns every month in 2022 to connect Berks County with up-to-date health information and to promote healthy living. Monthly themes will be announced and promoted with messaging distributed across the media organization’s multiple platforms.
