What do we know about the housing market in Berks County?
We know that home prices are increasing significantly. We know that much of the housing stock is aging, particularly in the City of Reading and the immediate suburbs. Is there a sufficient supply of affordable housing? What about rental units?
Looking at demographic data can help us to understand the need for housing and the challenges presented by our current housing stock. Data on the age, racial and ethnic composition, socioeconomic status of the residents of our county can offer us insights into the challenges and opportunities we face in addressing our housing needs.
Tom Love is a Director at PolicyMap, an online data and mapping tool used by government agencies, health and housing organizations, planning and economic development organizations and other non-profit organizations nationwide. Tom will demonstrate how to use the geospatial data on housing, health, demographics and area services and amenities to help guide efforts address challenges in those areas. He wil show the data for Berks County in each of these areas and how they intersect the housing challenges facing our community.
PolicyMap was launched as an organization in 2007 out of Reinvestment Fund, a Philadelphia-based community development financial institution supporting affordable housing, healthcare and healthy food access, education, and other community development programs in the Philadelphia metro area and throughout the U.S.
