May is Mental Health Awareness Month. As part of Berks Community Television’s on-going initiative to connect Berks County with the valuable health & wellness information, BCTV will be sharing important mental health statistics and local resources throughout the month of May.
Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in the United States since 1949 to raise awareness on the realities of living with mental illness and that mental health is important to overall wellbeing.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Health (NAMI), “Throughout this pandemic, we have faced isolation, turmoil and unrest, and a growing number of Americans experienced mental health symptoms. We’ve learned through this experience that we all struggle during challenging times and need support and access to care so we can thrive.”
This year’s Mental Health Awareness Month theme is “Together For Mental Health”. This message serves as a call to action for people to come together in advocating for better mental health care.
An estimated 1 in 5 adults experience a mental health condition every year. An estimated 1 in 6 youth experience a mental illness every year, with only half receiving treatment, such as therapy or medication. The rate of suicide in the U.S. has also increased 35% since 1999.
BCTV is launching new campaigns every month in 2022 to connect Berks County with information to promote healthy living. Monthly themes will be announced and promoted with messaging distributed across the media organization’s multiple platforms.
