Young Singers Unite for Ukraine Relief at Berks Youth Chorus Spring Concert

Story written by Sam Barge

May 09, 2022

Berks Youth Chorus (BYC) is pleased to present the final concert of its 30th anniversary season. Songs of Belonging will be held at 4:00 p.m., Sunday, May 15, 2022, at Atonement Lutheran Church in Wyomissing, PA. The concert caps off a full year of in-person singing despite the pandemic.

The concert will include performances by two BYC ensembles:  MasterSingers (youth in grades 8 through 12) and Chorale (children in grades 4 through 7), both directed by Sam Barge.

General admission is $10, and $5 for students.  VIP seating is $25.  Tickets may be purchased in advance online at, by phone at 610-898-7664 or, as available, at the door.

Songs of Belonging will also provide relief for the victims of the conflict in Ukraine as part of the BYC Chorus for Causes project.  Singers designed awareness bracelets about the conflict to be sold at the concert, the proceeds of which will go to Save the Children, an organization alleviating the needs of children affected in the crisis.  Save the Children advocates and provides access to education, psychosocial support, hygiene kits and cash grants to families to help meet basic needs.

Music will include African American spirituals, American folk tunes, pop songs and musical theatre tunes—all centered around messages of hope, compassion, gratitude and resilience.

Berks Youth Chorus is also offering Summer Sing, a weeklong summer camp for youth entering grades 3-7, on July 25-29, 2022. The camp welcomes all children, without audition. BYC Summer Sing is for children who love to sing and want a fun summer experience with other children from across the county.

Summer Sing 2022 will be held at Atonement Lutheran Church, 5 Wyomissing Boulevard, Wyomissing, from Monday, July 25 through Friday, July 29. Camp concludes with a Friday afternoon performance. BYC offers the camp free, except for a $10 registration fee. Summer Sing is free for 2022-2023 BYC Singers.

All young people are also invited to join Berks Youth Chorus.  With headquarters in Reading’s geographically accessible GoggleWorks Center for the Arts, BYC has served thousands of young people through a premier choral program that runs September through May each year.  Members, in grades 3 through 12, receive high quality vocal instruction and perform at venues throughout Berks County.  BYC provides a safe, nurturing environment where singers thrive, become engaged in a community of fellow singers, and are nourished artistically, civically, and spiritually.

BYC Singers represent school districts, private schools and home schools throughout Berks County. This concert season is supported by the Reading Musical Foundation, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Presser Foundation and the Neag Foundation.
