Highmark Foundation Awards Grant to Western Berks Free Medical Clinic

Jun 09, 2022

L-R: Jane L. Brooks, Community Affairs Regional Manager, Highmark Blue Shield/Highmark Foundation; J. Gregory Colahan, President, Board of Directors, and Volunteer, Western Berks Free Medical Clinic; Nipa R. Doshi, MD, Medical Director, Board of Directors, and Volunteer, Western Berks Free Medical Clinic; Stacie Dreibelbis, Administrative Director, Western Berks Free Medical Clinic

The Highmark Foundation awarded a $25,000 grant to Western Berks Free Medical Clinic in June to advance the Robesonia-based Clinic’s plans to open a satellite in the city of Reading.  The funding will support plans to double the number of uninsured individuals receiving services by opening and maintaining a second Clinic location in the city of Reading.

The satellite’s planned location on the campus of Mary’s Shelter (615 Kenhorst Boulevard, Reading) was selected for its proximity to the majority of medically underserved adults in Berks County.  Opening later this year, the satellite is expected to accommodate an additional 100 patients monthly for primary care, women’s care, and chronic disease management.

The Highmark Foundation, a private charitable organization headquartered in Pittsburgh, provides funding to healthcare organizations that improve outcomes for residents and communities served by Highmark, Inc., and its affiliates.  The Foundation’s grant recognizes the challenges faced “every day and especially since the COVID-19 global pandemic” by Western Berks as a safety net provider for individuals without health insurance.
