Exhibition receptions, City’s First Friday Block Party and major news for art center

Maria de Los Angeles, the internationally renowned artists and activist, will visit downtown Reading, PA on August 5th for the opening of a major exhibition and public program called Put On: Imagination, Migration, and Identity, a story-sharing and visual arts project which will immerse visitors, students, and participants in the work.

The exhibition, sponsored by the National Endowment of the Arts, will feature a variety of the artist’s works, including prominent paintings and “garment sculptures”, on view to the public admission-free each day from 9am-9pm in the center’s Cohen Gallery East.

Maria de Los Angeles, the renowned Mexican-born, New York City-based artist, will be in attendance on Friday, August 5. Her work focuses on issues of migration, displacement, identity and otherness through work in drawing, painting, installation, performance, fashion, and sculpture. As one of nearly 650,000 so-called Dreamers who immigrated to America as a child, she learned to navigate a new culture and language through a variety of artistic methods. In addition to the exhibition, de Los Angeles will return to downtown Reading throughout the fall to lead multiple workshops and placemaking programs, including a fashion show in partnership with Centro Hispano.

GoggleWorks has turned the opening into a campus-wide event, accompanied by the City of Reading’s First Friday Block Party to be held in outdoor spaces on the art center’s campus, featuring local food trucks, vendors, and live performances by Los Montros, Wanda Holdren Dance group, and DJ Hamilton Newton.

The 2nd floor Schmidt Gallery will include the opening reception of the Student Ambassador Fellowship, featuring work from high school students selected into the rigorous summer-long residency.

Earlier in the day, the art center will announce major plans for expanding its mission. The public will hear details about the expansion plans throughout the evening.
