Berks County Falls Free Coalition to Hold Event for Falls Prevention Awareness

Falling is NOT a normal part of aging. The Berks County Falls Free Coalition is committed to empowering all older adults in Berks County to reduce their risk of falls, which are one of the greatest causes of serious injuries and death among people over age 65.  Berks County Falls Free Coalition is partnering with the National Council on Aging (NCOA) to mark Falls Prevention Awareness Week. As part of this national outreach campaign, Berks County Falls Free Coalition is holding an event to raise awareness among older adults in our hometown.

The FREE event will take place on Thursday, September 22, at the Alvernia University Tom & Helen Flynn Complex building, 465 Saint Bernardine Street, Reading, PA 19607, from 9am-1:00pm.

This event is geared towards older adults who want to be proactive with their health and wish to engage in learning more about fall prevention and healthy lifestyles. There will be opportunities to participate in fall-related screenings such as grip strength, circulation, hearing, vision, blood pressure, and balance screenings.  In addition, we have added free flu shots, fall prevention bingo, access to an indoor track, free lunch, and several chances to win raffle prizes.  Guests can expect a sample break out fitness session provided by Berks Encore and several other resource tables.

The Berks County Falls Free Coalition (BCFFC) is a partnership between local and state organizations dedicated to the prevention and reduction of falls and fall-related injuries. BCFFC supports healthcare professionals, family caregivers, and older adults by offering evidence-based programs that promote education, improved mobility, and active lifestyles through a focus on comprehensive wellness. Partners include; Berks’s Encore, Reading Hospital, Berks County Area Agency on Aging, Reading Rehabilitation Hospital of Wyomissing, Rehab 1, UPMC Health Plan, Encompass Health, YMCA, Alvernia University, and Berks Community Health Center
