Fifteen First Year Albright College Students Named Global Scholars

Throughout their entire first year, a cohort of likeminded students will be living and learning together as Albright College’s inaugural class of Global Scholars. The group of 15 first year students will arrive on campus a day early, and will be housed together in a living learning community throughout their first year, while taking a series of courses together in the fall and spring semesters.

Included in the program is a January study away experience during which Global Scholars explore a particular topic with Albright faculty who are teaching the Scholars’ fall and spring courses. The first cohort will study Spanish together, aiding in their study abroad exploration of South America. Using Cuenca, Ecuador as a base, students will live with a host family for several weeks while learning from Albright faculty about comparative cultures. Future Global Scholars study away locations include Costa Rica, Ecuador, France, Ghana, Mexico and Spain.

Open to students exploring any major, the Global Scholars program is designed to provide meaningful study abroad experiences for students who are often underrepresented in study abroad programs, including students of color, first-generation students and students with high financial need. Employment opportunities to mentor incoming program participants will be available for second year Global Scholars.

Fifty-five percent of Albright’s incoming class of 480 students are first generation (the first members of their families going to college). Forty-two graduated in the top 10 of their high school’s class. They join the Reading community from 22 states and four countries.

An exceptional and unique opportunity explore cultural diversity and global perspectives across a wide-variety of academic areas, the innovative Global Scholars program is consistent with Albright’s guarantee that each student learns how to engage the world, understand the world, and is prepared to make an impact on a rapidly changing world through learning experiences that spark creativity and innovative thinking.
