Get Moving with You Matter: Mental Health Awareness Walk

An Initiative to bring awareness to mental health and break the stigma on mental health

READING, PA. – During the COVID-19 pandemic, 73% of college students reported having some level of mental health concerns while trying to balance their health, education, family, and work responsibilities. Research shows that on average 40% of college students have experienced depression so severe they have difficulty functioning and 60% have overwhelming anxiety. To help address the mental health concerns of college students, the You Matter Movement, LLC: A Mental Health Community was formed in 2021.

The You Matter Movement aims to break mental health stigmas, focusing on college-aged students through education, resources, and community. Partnering with education institutions to develop online resources and safe spaces to meet the needs of these students is most critical for providing the necessary support systems and peer-to-peer connections so they know they are not alone.

Active Minds is the leading nonprofit organization that empowers students to speak openly about mental health in order to educate others and encourage help-seeking. By developing and supporting chapters of a student-run mental health awareness, education, and advocacy group on campuses nationwide, the nonprofit organization works to increase students’ awareness of mental health issues, provide information and resources regarding mental health and mental illness, encourage students to seek help as soon as it is needed, and serve as liaison between students and the mental health community. The Active Minds Chapter at Alvernia University, changes the culture on Alvernia’s campuses and in the community by providing information, leadership opportunities, and advocacy to mental health for college students. This chapter is a student-run mental health awareness group that educates, and advocates changes to the stigma on mental health throughout Alvernias campus. They hold campus-wide events and national programs that are aimed to remove the stigma that surrounds mental health issues, and create a comfortable environment for an open conversation about mental health issues on campus.

On Sunday, October 9, 2022, at Alvernia University, the You Matter Movement and Active Minds are partnering to host the inauguralGet Moving with You Matter: Mental Health Awareness Walk. The walk will feature community support vendors, information about Mental Health, live music, and activities. Today, we are writing to invite you to consider partnering with the You Matter Movement in creating awareness in Berks County about mental health and supporting our local students.

The You Matter Movement aims to break mental health stigmas, focusing on college-aged students through education, resources, and community. Mental Health affects all of us, but the numbers of support for counseling services for college students have grown tremendously over the years. Creating a movement that will provide them with peer-to-peer connections, resources, and a community that will bring them together to show that they are not alone.

The You Matter Movement will be an outlet for those who need it and partner with different colleges and universities to make this movement a reality. Join the Movement, Be the Movement. We can break this stigma together.
