Celebrating National Philanthropy Day and Decolonizing Wealth

(Reading, Pa.) – Join the Berks Regional Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) for a celebration of National Philanthropy Day and conversation about decolonizing wealth.

National Philanthropy Day is a special day set aside in November. According to AFP Global, the purpose of this day is to recognize the great contributions of philanthropy – and those people active in the philanthropic community – to the enrichment of our world.

NPD was originally conceived of and organized by Douglas Freeman in the 1980’s, and the first official events held in 1986 after President Reagan signed the official NPD proclamation. The day provides an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of giving and all that it has made possible. NPD celebrates the endless daily contributions individuals and organizations across the world make to countless causes and missions.

The 2022 NPD Breakfast, Awards and Conversation with Edgar Villanueva will take place on Thursday, November 10th at the DoubleTree Hotel in Reading, PA. Breakfast begins at 7:30 am and the program commences at 8:00 am.

The annual breakfast honors individuals, organizations, and businesses for their extraordinary philanthropic achievements in Berks County.

Immediately following the awards breakfast, AFP Berks will be hosting a conversation with Edgar Villanueva, founder and principal of the Decolonizing Wealth Project and Liberated Capital from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. This special guest presentation is made possible by the support of the Berks County Community Foundation.

Edgar is an award-winning author, activist, and expert on issues of race, wealth, and philanthropy. His bestselling book, Decolonizing Wealth (2018, 2021) has been called a ‘wake-up call’ to philanthropy.

He advises a range of organizations including national and global philanthropies and nonprofits to Fortune 500 companies on social impact strategies to advance racial equity from within and through their investment strategies.

Decolonizing Wealth offers hopeful and compelling alternatives to the dynamics of colonization in the philanthropic and social finance sectors. In 2019, Villanueva founded Liberated Capital, a fund that invites individuals and organizations to give through a reparations model that trusts and supports the leadership of those most impacted by historical and systemic racism.

He holds two degrees from the Gillings Global School of Public Health at The University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and is an enrolled member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina.

Ticket information and sponsorship opportunities for both events can be found at AFP Berks 2022 NPD.
