Twin Valley Middle School Students Bake Cookies for U.S. Military

The Twin Valley Middle School (TVMS) hosted the 20th year of the 7th Grade Cookie Bake on the morning of Friday, October 28, 2022. The goal of the Cookie Bake is to bake, package, and ship boxes of cookies to U.S. military members. During the event, 7th Grade students rotated through a baking station, worked on an art project, and had the opportunity to listen and ask questions to soldiers, both active and retired, who volunteered to come share their experiences. At the end of the event, TVMS 7th Grade students baked and packaged over 8,500 cookies and shipped 31 boxes of cookies and student letters to U.S. military members!

The Cookie Bake was started in 2002 by Mrs. Lisa Thiry, a 7th Grade Math Teacher at the time. The interdisciplinary activity allows students to take a recipe for chocolate chip cookies and calculate the amount of ingredients that would be necessary for every 7th Grade student to mix a batch of cookies with a partner. Parent and community volunteers assisted students with mixing the batter, portioning onto sheet trays, and transporting trays to the kitchen where adult volunteers handled the baking process. Once baked and cooled, the cookies were packaged to send to military members who are stationed abroad. Included with each box of cookies are letters students wrote in their Language Arts classes.

Boxes of cookies are shipped with the assistance of Keystone Military Families with funds that were collected by selling cookie coupons to 5th, 6th, and 8th Grade students. The coupons were redeemed on the day of the Cookie Bake for a fresh chocolate chip cookie. TVMS raised over $1,300 that will be donated to Keystone Military Families to cover the cost of shipping the boxes.

Mr. Jerry Wilczynski, 7th Grade Math Teacher, shares, “This is the 20th year of our Cookie Bake project. Each year it seems to get bigger and better. This project serves as a small way that we, as teachers and students, can say thank you to those who protect and serve our country. It is also a reminder that, in a time when we are surrounded by negative news, there are a lot of people who are doing good things to serve their communities.”
