Opportunity House named Alyssa Bushkie, Chief Operating Officer of the organization. She is the first chief operating officer in the organization’s history.
A Berks County native, Alyssa graduated from Wilson High School and graduated from Penn State Berks Campus with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education. She holds a master’s degree in Strategic Human Resource Management from St. Joseph’s University, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Prior to joining Opportunity House, Alyssa worked at the YMCA of Reading and Berks County since 2012. She most recently served as the Director of Operations. In this role, she was responsible for operational oversight of five branches, leading the executive team, and communications team. She was also responsible for bringing new programs and initiatives to the organization. Her previous roles at the YMCA of Reading and Berks County included: Branch Executive Director, Child Care Director and Youth and Family Director.
Modesto Fiume, Opportunity House President noted “Alyssa is the ideal person to fill this critical role in our organization. Her extensive experience and skill set are a perfect fit with our strategic goal of expanding our footprint and programming in the community.”
In this new role, Alyssa will be responsible for oversight of the homeless shelter, housing program, Second Street Learning Center, Warehouse and OppShop, retail thrift operation. “I was attracted to Opportunity House for its strong mission and big impact on the Berks County community,” noted Alyssa. Her extensive experience in nearly all aspects of a not-for-profits organization will be especially important as the greater Reading area will continue to experience an increase in the homeless population. “There is a substantial need for affordable housing options. We’ve seen an increase in homeless people who can no longer afford the skyrocketing rents in our area and throughout our country,” noted Modesto.
Since 1987, Opportunity House has been providing shelter to the most vulnerable populations in Berks County. We have provided shelter and supportive housing to thousands of clients and tirelessly work to reduce and eliminate homelessness.
The Second Street Learning Center is a Keystone 4 Star Early Learning Center providing quality daycare for over 200 children each year. Programs include infant and toddler programs, Pre-K counts, and programs for school age children. By providing affordable day care, parents can work and eliminate the cycle of poverty in their families.
Opportunity House Reuse and Recycle Program provides warehouse jobs in addition to the OppShop which is a retail thrift business helping to reduce and eliminate waste in landfills and promote a cleaner environment. All proceeds from OppShop benefit Opportunity House Shelter programs.
