Drake’s “Her Loss” Album Review

On Friday, November 4, Drake released a new Album titled “Her Loss”. It was a collaborative album with 21 Savage, consisting of sixteen songs and one hour of music. This was a big deal for 21 Savage, since he has not released a full album since quarantine in 2020. However, this album will be Drake’s third album in the span of the last year or so.

When the album first came out, it was slightly controversial at first. Drake and 21 Savage take a few jabs at different people in some of the songs, such as “Circo Loco” when they bring up Megan Thee Stallion. However, the album is still doing extremely well. “Her Loss” is currently debuting at No.1 on Billboard 200 Albums Chart, replacing Taylor Swift who was previously at No.1.

The first song on the album is “Rich Flex”. This song quickly became a meme and is surfacing everywhere from Tik Tok to other social media platforms. In the song, it seems as though Drake is trying to instigate something with 21 Savage. There are lines in the song such as “21 can you do something for me?”, and “Can you talk to the opps’ necks for me?”. It seems like Drake is kind of pushing 21 Savage to an enemy because Drake doesn’t want to do it himself. The song overall is about Drake and 21 Savage bragging about how much money they have. The chorus where they talk about their ‘rich flex’ is one of the most loved parts of the song and something that people seemed to really like.

The next song on the album is called “Major Distribution”. This song basically talks about wealth, power, and money again. There is a line in the song that says, “Hmm, hmm, in this mansion, I’m Macaulay Culkin, paid in full, I’m Mekhi Phifer”. This is a Home Alone reference that he is using as a metaphor to describe how big his mansion is and how it makes him feel tiny. Drake is now a billionaire, thanks to all his success in the music industry. He talks about how he “paid in full” to talk about how wealthy he is. There has not been as much buzz around this song as some of the others on the alum, but it is still a great song. 21 Savage gets to go off for a little and has a few lines that stand out.

“On BS” is the next song on the album. This song can get a little controversial, because the song is about Drake and 21 Savage calling out artists that they think are lame. One of the lines that stands out to me is “I jump on your song and make you sound like you the feature”. There are also other references that some people, especially women, did not like very much such as “I blow a half a million on you hoes”. In my opinion, this song can get repetitive, especially the chorus, but overall, the song has a steady beat and some good lines.

“BackOutsideBoyz” talks about a feud back in 2015 when Drake fans correlated his song “Hotline Bling” to the song “Cha Cha” by DRAM and is also the next song on the album. DRAM has already responded to the song, saying that Drake should “shut up about the situation because it happened five years ago”. Besides the drama, the song has a more mellowed-out, chill vibe compared to a lot of the other songs on the album.

The next song on the album is titled “Privileged Rappers”. This song was used as a promo for the album and a short video was released with the song. In the video, Drake is dressed in expensive clothes and is seen wearing expensive jewelry. The song is talking about wealth, and rappers who don’t know what it takes because they are privileged. In this song, it seems like Drake and 21 Savage have more independent parts. Their parts don’t really blend, they are more separate. However, this is still a well rated and good song.

Unlike the previous song, in the song titled “Spin Bout U”, Drake and 21 Savage’s voices are more interwoven, and blend together nicely. They have more parts that seem shared. This is also one of the top-rated songs of the album. This is also one of, if not, my favorite song on the album. The song makes references from what is going on in the real world right now with Roe v Wade being overturned. It talks about feminism and how the government is trying to make laws on what women can and cannot do with their bodies. One of the lines that sticks out to me in this song is “Damn, just turned on the news and seen that men who never got pu**y in school, Are makin’ laws about what women can do”.

“Hours in Silence” is the next sing in the album. It is a six-minute song, which was a little too long for me, and a lot of others. This song also has more of a chill, laid-back vibe to it. The lyrics flow nicely, but the last three minutes of the song seem kind of unnecessary to me. It seems like in this song, Drake is trying to be more honest by saying things like “It’s my fault, for once I take accountability”.

The next song on the album is called “Treacherous Twins”. This song really shows the love that Drake and 21 savage have for each other, and I feel as though their friendship really bleeds through in this song. They refer to each other as “best friends” throughout the song, which you don’t hear a lot of artists, especially rappers, do in songs. They talk about how they can depend on one another and how whenever they need a friend, the other one is always there. Overall, I think that this is a good song and fits into the album well.

“Circo Loco” is the next song on the album and is also one of the most controversial songs. There are a lot of misogynistic references in the song, and there are also references to Megan Thee Stallion and her gunshot incident that occurred back in 2020. In the song, they called Megan a liar about the incident, and it is said that women lie about instances like this. This song did also not get the best reviews. If I were to skip any song on the album, it would probably be this one.

The next song on the album, along with Drake and 21 Savage, also features Travis Scott. The song is titled “Pu**y & Millions”. The song talks about how when you are rich and wealthy, the more problems you may have. Drake says in the song that if wealth does come with more problems, than bring them on. The song also talks about some of the problems that come with being wealthy, such as finding love.

“Broke Boys” is the next song on the album. Drake and 21 Savage rap about things that come along with being rich, such as expensive cars and designer clothes, expensive living, and broke boys. Drake had some good bars during the song as well. Both Drake and 21 Savage make disses towards the brand Adidas during this song, while wearing their Nike’s loud and proud during the video that goes with the song. Even though this song is not one of the favorites of the album, I don’t hate it.

The next song is “Middle of the Ocean”. This song had really good reviews, some of the best out of all the songs on the album. I really enjoyed this song. Drake talks about some of the luxuries he has, and a lot of the terms he used I have never even heard of before. He talks about some of the foods he eats that most people have never heard of before, his expensive and sophisticated fashion choices, and how he loves signing contracts. He also talks about his relationship with Robert Kraft a little bit. Overall, this is a great song, and a lot of people’s favorite song of the album.

“Jumbotron Sh** Poppin” is the next song. It is one of the shorter songs on the album and offers more variety to the album because it sounds a little different compared to the other songs on the album. For me, at least, this song is just kind of there. It is not my favorite, but also not my least favorite.

“More M’s” is the next song on the album and offers variety to the album because of the different vibe and tune that it has. This song presents Drake as a high status, alpha male. Lines in the song are “Strike like a match, knock him out his match, knife to a gun fight…”, which shows how Drake wants to present himself as a strong alpha male. The song has a steady beat and is overall an okay song.

The next song is “3AM on Glenwood”. This song only features 21 Savage, and fans say it is like a monologue. The song talks about 21 Savage’s life experiences and tragic events that have happened throughout his life, such as losing loved ones. A lot of people did not expect a song like this to come from 21 Savage, but so many people liked this type of vibe. I personally really like this song because it’s different and something that you wouldn’t expect.

Lastly, the last song of the album is titled “I Guess It’s F*** Me”. This song is really good, however, it kind of in a way contradicts the main message of the album in my opinion. The title of the album is “Her loss”, but there are lines in the song such as “why did you leave me”. However, the song still got good reviews and fans still seemed to like it.

Overall, I think that the album was okay. There was some misogyny sprinkled throughout the album which I personally did not like, but there were still good songs in the album. My favorite songs were “Spin Bout U” and “Broke Boys”. As of now, some of the most listened to songs in the album are “Rich Flex”, “Major Distribution”, and “Pu*** & Millions”. The album could have been better, but it was not bad.
