Women’s Team to Play in WPSL Summer of 2023

Reading United A.C. will introduce a women’s U23 team that will participate in the Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) in summer of 2023, the team announced on November 29.

The Women’s Premier Soccer League is an amateur women’s soccer league in the United States and Canada. It is one of the top amateur leagues for women’s soccer in the United States soccer pyramid, below only the National Women’s Soccer League.  The WPSL is the longest-running active women’s soccer league in North America and in 2022 featured 135 teams in 4 regions with 17 conferences and 13 divisions.

“We are excited to partner with the WPSL to bring women’s pro-am soccer to the greater Reading area. Introducing a women’s team, along with 2023 being a Women’s World Cup year, will afford us tremendous opportunity to capitalize on the excitement surrounding women’s soccer in our country.,,” said Christian Bauer, Reading United Treasurer.

Reading United will look to build upon their massive success in the men’s game where they are perennial contenders and recognized as one of the top franchises within USL League Two.  Reading United last featured a women’s team as a Super 20 Women’s team in 2012.  Reading United won the 2011 Super 20 Women’s National title.

“We plan to use our experience in operating a successful men’s team to bring the same opportunities to the local women’s soccer players and coaches in our area.  There is a tremendous amount of women’s talent here and we look forward to giving them the same opportunities we have provided the men’s team.,” outlined Reading United Vice-President Art Auchenbach.

The WPSL featured several local PA teams in the 2022 season.  While the 2023 league alignment is not yet announced, the 2022 Mid-Atlantic Conference featured Fever SC (Bensalem, PA), Hershey FC, Lehigh Valley Tempest, PA Classics (Lancaster, PA), Torch FC (Perkasie, PA), and Real Central Jersey (who also feature against the men in USL League Two).

Reading United will be announcing tryout dates and sponsorship opportunities within two weeks.  Coach and staff appointments along with divisional alignments will be announced in advance of the WPSL league meetings later this winter.
