Reading High School JROTC Presented with National Award

Reading High School’s Marine Corps JROTC was presented with the 2022 Spirit Banner during the National High School Drill Team Competition. An annual, rotating award, the Spirit Banner recognizes the single Masters Level school that best glorifies their unit, their service, JROTC in general, and most especially, the National High School Drill Team Championships. This positive reflection on so many entities comes both on and especially off the drill floor through their conduct, words, and deeds.

According to Sports Network International, the organization that sponsors the National High School Drill Team Competition, “The program [Reading JROTC] didn’t win this award through their drill prowess, though they are always competitive wherever they go. They represent their school and their program with purpose. They seem to display at all times that they understand that conduct on and off the deck is as important as the final scoring.”

“The program [Reading JROTC] glorifies the Nationals in actions and deeds, serving as amazing ambassadors for the finest drill competition in the world and everywhere else they compete. This program is led by the kind of instructors who ask how you are doing and wait for the answer. They take the time to have a great conversation about their kids, their program, the differences that have been made. They are a classy group.”

“We were all shocked to hear that we won,” said Destiny Fowler, Reading High School Senior and JROTC Battalion Commander. “We put our all into being at Nationals. It wasn’t easy after Covid … we lost a lot of members and had to rebuild from scratch.”

The Reading School District could not be prouder of Reading High School’s Marine Corps JROTC.
