Tompkins Community Bank Celebrates “Banksgiving” with Donations to Local Nonprofits

In its ongoing dedication to strengthening the communities it serves across Pennsylvania, this Thanksgiving Tompkins Community Bank gifted a total of $15,000 to local food-focused nonprofits in celebration of its annual “Banksgiving” holiday donation. This year’s nonprofits included Helping Harvest of Berks County, Share Foods Inc. of Philadelphia, the Council of Churches of Schuylkill Haven, and the Olivet’s Boys & Girls Club of Reading. The bank has donated a total of $45,000 over the past three years through the Banksgiving program to help local nonprofits fight food insecurity right here at home.

“The holidays can be challenging for many families, especially during school breaks. With the rising costs of goods and the continual aftereffects of the pandemic, necessities like ingredients for a nutritious hot meal don’t always come easily,” said Ginger Kunkel, president of Tompkins’ Pennsylvania market. “It’s our hope that these gifts will make a meaningful difference in all of the communities we serve.”

The Banksgiving donations round out a year of community-focused initiatives for Tompkins. Throughout 2022, the bank continually offered free virtual seminars on topics ranging from first-time homebuying to fraud protection, as a means of cultivating financial education and independence. The company also hosted its annual Cow Pie Bingo fundraiser in August, which raised a total of $27,578.43 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, far surpassing the bank’s $22,000 goal and bringing the cumulative total of funds raised to more than $130,000. Tompkins employees also participated in various volunteer days throughout the year, most recently partnering with the Friends of the Wissahickon, a Philadelphia-based organization whose purpose is to preserve one of the city’s largest parks.

“Hands-on initiatives such as these are at the core of our mission as a community bank,” continued Kunkel. “We live where we work, and our local insight enables us to focus our efforts on specific community needs that might otherwise go unmet. It’s truly special to see our impact in action in our own backyards—and this is what inspires us to continue seeking innovative ways for giving back.”
