Muhlenberg Greene Architects’ 503 Penn Street Design Recognized by Eastern PA Chapter
The American Institute of Architects Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter honored Muhlenberg Greene Architects with the Interior Architecture Award for the Weidenhammer Building at the President Dinner on December 1, 2022, at the President’s Night and Design Awards in Allentown.
The annual event is a celebration of design excellence, innovative partnerships, and nearly 200 inspiring Architects, Associates, and Allied Members within the chapter. The Design Awards program highlights members’ dedication to creating a better built environment, engaging our communities, and advocating for the industry through a culture of excellence and innovation.
Jurors commented that they were immediately drawn to the interior, particularly because of the way in which it beautifully exposes old material, such as the wood and iron framing, and the exposed brick party walls. They also noted that public restrooms are seldom seen as contributing to the overall interior feel of a building – but this project is a clear exception – owing to the elegant exposed historic stone in this unlikely space. Additionally, the jurors pointed out that the fourth-floor skylight floods the lobby with natural light bringing cheer to the entire interior.
The firm was also recognized for the project in 2021 by the Greater Reading Chamber Alliance, honored in the Bar/Restaurant category at the Building Berks Awards. Jim Sarro, AIA, Secretary and Principal of Muhlenberg Greene Architects was the Principal-in-Charge of the project.
Partners on the project include owner John P. Weidenhammer, the Ciatto Construction Company, Building Systems Engineering Group, and the City of Reading. To see the award-winning interior of the building, visit the Reading Distilling Guild Wednesday through Sunday.
