Reading United Announces Rebecca Kotula as First WPSL Commitment of Inaugural Season

Former Wyomissing High School & East Stroudsburg University Academic All-American commits to team

Reading United A.C. is excited to announce the commitment of midfielder Rebecca Kotula from East Stroudsburg University as the team’s first Women’s Premier Soccer League (WPSL) player, pending league approval.

Kotula, a 21-year-old native of Berks County, Pennsylvania, is currently a junior at East Stroudsburg University majoring in political science and philosophy, where she has been a standout player for the Warriors. Prior to joining ESU, Kotula played high school soccer at Wyomissing High School, where she was a three-year starter and a two-time captain of the Spartans.

“Becca represents exactly what we want our players to be,” said Coach Gosselin.  “She is tenacious, committed and someone who the future can look up to.  I look forward to welcoming Becca to our program and I expect big things from her this season.  Reading United is fortunate to have a player and person of her proven caliber as our first committed player.”

During her college career, Kotula has earned numerous accolades, including 2022 United Soccer Coaches Scholar All American Second Team,  PSAC First Team honors and was named to the D2CCA All-Atlantic Region First Team. Her most improbable claim to fame was the first goal of the season for the East Stroudsburg University women’s soccer team was a memorable one. During ESU’s first athletic event of the 2022-23 academic year on NCAA Division II opening day, she rocketed in the first goal of the season for ESU from 35-yards during the 39th minute of action, a goal which would feature her on ESPN Sportscenter. In her debut season at ESU, she played in all 12 regular-season games and scored three goals. Kotula has familiarity with the WPSL, having featured for divisional rival Lehigh Valley Tempest last season.

Kotula’s signing is an important step for Reading United AC as they prepare for the upcoming WPSL season. The team is looking forward to adding more top local talent to compete against some of the best teams in the region and are looking at Kotula’s commitment as a beacon to other players looking to make an impact on the inaugural season team.

“We are thrilled to have Rebecca join Reading United AC as our first WPSL commitment,” said team Vice President Art Auchenbach. “Having followed Rebecca since her time at Wyomissing, I am excited for the energy and leadership that she will bring to our new team.  Her style of play will help define who we are as a team.  She is an excellent midfielder with an already impressive college career and a bright future in the WPSL.”

Kotula is excited about the opportunity to play for Reading United AC, stating “I am excited to be part of the inaugural Reading United WPSL team. I’m eager to start learning from an extremely talented coaching staff and playing with a fantastic group of girls. I can’t wait to see what we can accomplish!”

The WPSL is a national women’s soccer league that provides opportunities for elite female players to compete at a high level. With over 130 teams nationwide, the WPSL is the largest women’s soccer league in the world.

Reading United A.C. continues its preparation for the upcoming 2023 season with open tryouts for its men’s USL League Two and women’s WPSL teams on March 5th and 12th from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Alvernia University’s turf field.
