South Mountain YMCA Camps Announce Bill Hinton as New President, CEO

Bill Hinton brings extensive experience in camping and youth development.

The South Mountain YMCA Camps announces that Bill Hinton has been chosen to serve as the new President and Chief Executive Officer. He will succeed Nathan Brant, who has served as CEO for the past thirteen years.

Bill most recently served as the Director at Camp Heyo-Went-A. Bill brings with him more than twenty-two years of experience in the YMCA and twenty-four years of experience in the camping movement. His focus on creating an environment to build better people through teaching YMCA Core Values makes him an ideal choice to lead the South Mountain YMCA Camps.

“We are privileged to welcome Bill to South Mountain YMCA,” said John McCloskey, President of the Board of Directors of the South Mountain YMCA. “Bill is an energetic, thoughtful leader with an unparalleled commitment to camping and youth development. His background as a highly respected executive director of camping service makes him an excellent choice to lead South Mountain YMCA. We know that Bill will provide the leadership to guide South Mountain as it continues its mission of ensuring camp for all.”

“I am thrilled to be joining the South Mountain YMCA Camp family and the Berks County community,” said Hinton. “I started going to summer camp when I was eight years old and it was the place I felt I could be my truest self. I can’t wait to get to work at South Mountain YMCA Camps, tell our story, and listen and learn from the folks we serve.”

With over 20 years of executive-level leadership, Bill has grown every camp he has led. His leadership has focused on creating an environment to build better people through teaching YMCA Core Values. In addition to being focused on strong financial management and accountability, Bill’s passion is sharing how YMCA camps have an enduring impact on children’s lives. This provides a compelling premise for fundraising initiatives. Bill has led YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow in Texas, YMCA Camp Manitou-Lin in Michigan, YMCA Camp Santa Maria in Colorado and YMCA Camp Hayo-Went-Ha in Michigan. Bill will be assuming his new role as CEO in April of this year.

Bill holds a degree from Colby College in Waterville, Maine where he received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and played four years of Division III Basketball.

The South Mountain YMCA Camps, operating as an independent YMCA Camp and Conference Center since 1982, has been providing youth recreational and educational programs for over 60 years (previously under the direction of the YMCA of Reading & Berks County). Camp Conrad Weiser and Bynden Wood Day Camp provide the primary backdrop for all activities; however, program opportunities today stretch into areas of Outdoor Education and Environmental Education programs, curriculum training, Corporate Conferencing, kindred group retreats, Church Retreats, Parent/Child programs, and more.

The YMCA serves over 8,500 individuals annually with participants largely drawn from the local area and surrounding communities. Our summer campers come from Pennsylvania, our neighboring states, and more than a dozen other countries.
