Youth Vigil for Peace to be Held in Reading

by Olivet Boys & Girls Club

May 12, 2023

In response to the recent increase in gun violence locally and across the country, a peace vigil will be held in Reading to honor the victims and to raise awareness about the importance of nonviolence and peace. The vigil is organized by Olivet Boys & Girls Clubs of Reading & Berks County, a community-based organization dedicated to enabling all young people to reach their full potential as healthy, productive, caring, responsible citizens.

The Youth Vigil for Peace will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 7:00 PM at the Olivet Clinton Street Club, 677 Clinton Street, Reading, PA 19601. The event will be led by youth and supported by adults and will include Olivet Boys & Girls Club youth leaders, a candlelight ceremony, and a moment of silence to honor those who have lost their lives to violence.

“This vigil is an opportunity for us to come together as a community to remember those who have lost their lives to violence, and to reaffirm our commitment to creating a safer world for our children,” said Christopher Winters, Olivet President & CEO. “We want our kids to know that they have the power to make a difference and that they can be a force for change in their communities.”

The Youth Vigil for Peace is a non-partisan event that aims to promote awareness about the impact of gang and gun violence and to inspire kids to take action to promote peace. It is also a chance for families to come together to show support for each other and for those who have been affected by violence.

“We believe that by coming together in solidarity, we can create a safer and more peaceful future for our children,” said Winters. “We hope that this event will inspire kids to become advocates for a safer future and to work towards a world where violence is a thing of the past.”
