2023-2024 Berks County Dairy Princess Named

Mohrsville, PA – The 2023-2024 Berks County Dairy Princess is looking forward to promoting the Berks County Dairy Industry. Sara Haag was crowned as the 2023-2024 Berks County Dairy Princess on May 13, 2023, at the Mohrsville Church of the Brethren.

Helping Sara promote the Berks County Dairy Industry this year will be Alexa Davis who was named the 2023-24 Berks County Alternate Dairy Princess and Annie Kelchner who was named the 2023-24 Berks County Lil’ Miss Dairy Princess. They will also be assisted by a group of Dairy Ambassadors.

Sara is the 18-year-old daughter of Michael and Alicia Haag of Mohrsville. Sara has a younger brother Cody. Sara helps on her parents Mic-Ali Farm which has been in their family for 7 generations. She helps with feeding calves, calf care and milking cows. She also enjoys showing her Jersey, Red and White, and Holstein dairy animals at the local fairs and state shows. Another passion of Sara’s is fitting her dairy animals as well as participating in showmanship contests.

Sara will be graduating from Schuylkill Valley High School and Berks Career and Technology Center (BCTC). At BCTC, Sara is the secretary for Health Occupations Students of America and is part of the National Technical Honors Society Program. This fall, Sara plans to attend the Reading Hospital Tower of Health and Sciences Registered Nurse Program. Sara attends the Mohrsville Church of the Brethren and is active in the youth group.

Sara has been a 4-H member for 9 years. She is currently serving as the Northwestern Berks 4-H Dairy Club President. She has also participated in 4-H dairy judging on the local and state level. This past year, she was a member of the Pennsylvania 4-H Dairy Judging Team competing at the All-American Dairy Show in Harrisburg, PA and the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI. At the World Dairy Expo, Sara placed 1st overall individual and her team placed 1st nationally. This earned them a chance to judge at an international contest in Scotland this summer.

Alexa is the 16-year-old daughter of Michael and Angela Davis of Leesport. She has an older brother and sister and a younger brother. Alexa and her family live on a small farm. Alexa is a member of the Northwestern 4-H Dairy Club. She enjoys showing her Holstein and Milking Shorthorn animal at the local fairs as well as state shows. This summer she will serve as a 4-H Camp Counselor at 4-H camp. Alexa has also served as a Berks County Dairy Ambassador for the past three years.

Alexa will be a junior at Schuylkill Valley High School this fall. She also attends Berks Career and Technology Center and is taking classes in Dental Occupations. At Schuylkill Valley, Alexa is on the football and basketball cheer squad as well as the cheer competition squad. This past February, her cheer competition squad placed 2nd at the Reach the Beach Cheer Competition in Ocean City, MD. Outside of school, Alexa is an active member of the Mohrsville Church of the Brethren where she participates in the youth group, assists with VBS, and volunteers at the local shelter. She is also a member of the Ontelaunee Grange and serves as a camp counselor at Grange county and state camps.

Annie is the 4-year-old daughter of Mitch and Kate Kelchner of Oley. She has a younger sister, Jordie. The Kelchner family milks 140 Holsteins and crop farms 400 acres. Annie will be attending Oley Elementary this fall as a Kindergarten student. She enjoys helping on the farm, especially with the dogs, cats, chicks, ducks, goats, and calves. She also likes to feed the cows with dad and help milk the cows with mom.

During the pageant, Sara performed her skit where she was a doctor with patients with different aliments. With all three patients, she was able to help their issues with drinking whole milk. Sara also gave a speech where she took us on a trip to the future to show us how farmers care for the environment. Alexa presented her speech on the reasons why she loves and supports the dairy industry.

Another portion of the pageant, both Sara and Alexa had to answer an impromptu question, “What is one piece of advice you would give to a student going into middle or high school?” Sara answered with make friends and don’t listen to what other people say about you. Alexa answered with be yourself and chose your friends wisely.

The Berks County Dairy Princess Promotion Committee would like to thank Natalie Grumbine 2022-2023 Berks County Dairy Princess and current PA State Alternate Dairy Princess, Olivia Lesher, 2022-2023 Berks County Alternate Dairy Princess, and Audrey Sattazahn, 2022-2023 Berks County Lil Miss Dairy Princess on a wonderful job of promoting and representing the Berks County Dairy Industry this past year. They spent countless hours at local events from stores to farms, parades and schools and many other places in between talking to the public about the importance of dairy products in your diet as well as how important the dairy farms are here in Berks County.

Emcee for the pageant was Jennifer Grimes a former Berks County and Pennsylvania State Dairy Princess.
