Local Author Brings Dragons to Life in Latest Book

Few people actively pursue their wildest dream from as far back as elementary school, but for local author L. Ryan Storms, the dream is a reality. Storms has wanted to author books for as long as she can remember, once upon a time crafting her own books on endless sheets of looseleaf paper and binding them with staples. The notebook paper now long gone, Storms’s fourth book, a young adult fantasy titled Temper the Dark, releases June 27th, 2023.

Temper the Dark is a standalone novel unrelated to her previously published trilogy. According to Storms, the story involves a boy, a girl, and a senile dragon loosely modeled after her own grandmother who was, Storms says, “a dragon in her own right.” Storms says the inspiration behind the book, as with most of her stories, is the concept of found self, found friends, and found family — ongoing themes in all of Storms’s works.

She credits American-Irish author Anne McCaffrey (1 April 1926 – 21 November 2011) with her love of all things dragon-related and says she wouldn’t have considered delving into the fantasy genre if it hadn’t been for stumbling upon McCaffrey’s books when she was a teen.

Storms’s first book A Thousand Years to Wait placed first in Young Adult Fiction, second in Cover Design, and Honorable Mention in New Author: Fiction in the 2021 Royal Dragonfly Book Awards. The same book was also an award-winning finalist in American Book Fest’s 2019 Best Book Awards. The Berks County author hopes Temper the Dark sees even greater success, but she acknowledges it can’t happen without her readers.

Temper the Dark is available for pre-order in both ebook and paperback format through all major retailers, including Amazon, Barnes & Noble, Indiebound, iBooks, and Kobo. For readers looking for a personalized copy, Storms will be vending at the Berks Celtic Festival at the Reading Liederkranz on June 24th, 2023 and signing at various bookstores and locations in Central and Eastern Pennsylvania throughout the year.
