New Outdoor Mural Featuring Yocum Institute’s New Mascot, A Yak

This summer, Yocum Institute for Arts Education is proud to announce the vibrant addition of an outdoor mural featuring our brand-new mascot, a lively yak who’s eagerly awaiting a name.  This captivating artwork was created by Andrew Pochan and the young artists of Yocum’s summer camp.

“My wife and I recently came back from Japan, and one aspect that struck us was that literally everything had a mascot,” Pochan said. “It wasn’t long before we came to the realization that Yocum Institute should have a mascot as well. This mural is the first in a potential series of murals at Yocum featuring these characters and more.”

Created by giant paint by numbers mural on 5×5 foot sheets of parachute paper (a fabric and paper blend). Each color was mixed and chosen by the artist, and then handed out to the students to paint the first few layers of the painting. Later, when the painting was almost done, with assistance Andrew pasted up the papers on the wall. The collaborative effort of these young artists has resulted in a vibrant masterpiece that shows off the essence of fun, imagination, and share experiences.
