Caron Treatment Centers, a leading, internationally recognized non-profit dedicated to addiction and behavioral healthcare treatment, research, prevention, and addiction medicine education, recently launched an expanded range of mental health and trauma services to complement its existing substance use disorder assessment, outpatient treatment, and recovery support programs at its newly updated Caron Outpatient Treatment Center in Wyomissing.

“There is an unprecedented mental health crisis taking place in the U.S. today,” said Dr. Ramona Palmerio-Roberts, Psy.D., Senior Executive Director of Regional Outpatient Services for Caron Treatment Centers. “Substance use and mental health disorders are often closely linked, as almost 40% of people with a substance use disorder (SUD) also suffer some form of co-occurring mental illness. The reverse relationship is also true, with nearly 20% of those with a mental illness also having a co-occurring SUD. Caron is responding to this growing need with this new range of outpatient mental health services.”

The mental health program offers support and counseling for people who are dealing with diagnoses and issues related to mood, anxiety, and trauma, as well as people with SUDs who now need treatment for mental health challenges. Among the programs offered:

Caron outpatient clinicians have training and certifications in treatment modalities such as cognitive processing therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR), internal family systems, racial trauma, expressive art, and trauma-informed experiential therapy. An attending psychiatrist is available for evaluation and medication management when indicated and participates in treatment planning for patients.

Trauma care is an especially important new service, as trauma affects people of every background, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, gender, and sexual orientation. Trauma and stressor-related disorders, like many other diagnoses, carry with them waves of other symptoms: anxiety, depression, anger, guilt, grief, self-esteem issues, substance use, and more. Caron’s team of certified trauma providers is trained in trauma-focused services and interventions to address and treat PTSD and other trauma and stressor-related presentations.

“Caron understands that suffering often comes not from our experience of emotional pain but from our attempts to avoid it,” continued Palmerio-Robert. “We help patients navigate the healing journey. Our goal is to help patients get to the root of their pain – finding both relief and a path to recovery – and replace unhealthy emotional response patterns with healthy ones. Trauma changes the brain, but healing does too.”

Serving the Berks County community for nearly 20 years, the Caron Outpatient Treatment Center offers a range of programs and services for teens, adults, and their families, including an outpatient mental health program and an outpatient addiction treatment program, treating both teens and adults.
