Senior citizens are often frequent targets of online scams and phishing attacks. A group of Penn State Berks students, under the moniker “Cyber Lions,” aim to raise awareness of cybercrimes and scams targeting seniors and to help protect them from scammers and criminals.
As part of Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Cyber Lions helped to educate residents of Phoebe Berks Retirement Community in Wernersville, PA, about cybersecurity issues and best practices on Friday, Oct. 20. They gave a brief presentation on password security, phishing scams, and safe practices for banking and shopping online. Following the presentation, the students answered questions and helped the residents to secure their devices.
Penn State Berks Cyber Lions are composed of students majoring in one of the college’s degree programs in cybersecurity analytics and operations (CYAOP), information technology (IT), and security and risk analysis (SRA), and students with an interest in cybersecurity. The students who gave the presentation included senior IT majors Corey Livinghouse and Vidda Jimenez; senior CYAOP majors Matthew Blake and Elizabeth Kowalczyk; junior SRA major Josh Breton; and first-year science major Jonathan McFadden.
