A group of concerned community members came together with a desire to help make Schuylkill County a more welcoming place for all residents, regardless of their racial background. They started a local branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
The mission of the NAACP is to take steps to ensure political, educational, social, and economic equality and rights for all persons, and to eliminate racial hatred and racial discrimination. The founding members want the Schuylkill County branch to do the necessary educational and advocacy work to advance racial equity in Schuylkill County.
“The NAACP is the nation’s premier civil rights organization, and we are excited to announce the establishment of a new branch in Schuylkill County,” shared Rubina Tareen, the first elected President of the Schuylkill NAACP. “We are ready to introduce ourselves to the community, and we welcome anyone who wants to learn more about the NAACP and how to get involved at our inaugural event at the Penn State campus in Schuylkill Haven.”
