Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks to Hold Kristallnacht Commemoration Nov. 8

The Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks, in partnership with Christ Episcopal Church, announce a circle of light peace vigil and interfaith service in commemoration of Kristallnacht on Wednesday, Nov. 8. The circle of light begins at 6:30 p.m., hosted by Greater Reading Unity Coalition, and the interfaith service is 7 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church, 435 Court St., Reading.

Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass or the November Pogrom, occurred on Nov. 9-10, 1938, and marked the beginning of the Holocaust, according to scholars. On those dates in 1938 in Germany and Austria, hundreds of synagogues and 7,500 Jewish business, homes, and community institutions were destroyed by mobs and Nazis. Nearly one hundred Jews were killed, and 30,000 Jews were arrested and sent to German concentration camps.

Jewish Federation of Reading is alarmed by the rise in dangerous antisemitism in the aftermath of Hamas’ terror attack on Israel on Oct. 7. This antisemitism is exploding on college campuses; city streets in the United States, Europe, and beyond; all over the internet; creating an atmosphere of intimidation and threat to Jews all over the world.

The community is invited to join us on Nov. 8 for an interfaith candlelight vigil and service.

The Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks is the planning, coordinating, and fundraising arm of the Jewish community. The Federation raises and allocates funds for The Jewish Federations of North America’s collective efforts in support of many vital national and international Jewish organizations.

The Greater Reading Unity Coalition is made up of the Jewish Federation of Reading/Berks, Reading Branch of NAACP, Centro Hispano, Bring the Change, Islamic Center of Reading, and the LGBT Center of Greater Reading.
