During a press conference on the afternoon of Tuesday, Nov. 21, Mayor Eddie Morán, along with Senator Judy Schwank and State Rep. Manny Guzman, announced the establishment of the Appointed City Revitalization and Improvement Zone (CRIZ) Working Group, a strategic initiative aimed at fostering economic growth and community development.

The Appointed CRIZ Working Group is comprised of a wide range of diverse community leaders, business representatives, and local stakeholders, all committed to steering the city toward a future of prosperity and vitality. This collaborative effort underscores the City of Reading’s commitment to leveraging the CRIZ program to its fullest potential, promoting innovation and enhancing the overall quality of life for its residents.

The CRIZ program, a state-sponsored initiative, provides municipalities with a valuable tool for spurring economic development, infrastructure improvement, and job creation within designated zones. The City of Reading recognizes the significance of this program and is dedicated to maximizing its impact on the community.

The newly formed CRIZ Working Group will play a pivotal role in advising and guiding the city’s utilization of the CRIZ program. Members of the working group will engage in collaborative discussions, share expertise, and work closely with city officials to identify strategic projects that align with the CRIZ objectives. The group’s collective knowledge and experience will be instrumental in ensuring the success of Reading’s CRIZ initiatives. The three appointments are Peter Rye, CEO of Brentwood Industries, Marisol Torres, a respected real estate associate broker, and Deb Millman, President of Greater Berks Development Fund, an affiliate of GRCA.

Mayor Eddie Morán expressed enthusiasm about the establishment of the CRIZ Working Group at Tuesday’s press conference, stating, “I am grateful to have many dedicated individuals who have been instrumental in the success of getting us to the position we are in. So today, I’m pleased to announce key appointments to the CRIZ working group, individuals who bring a wealth of experience and commitment to the table.”

At Tuesday’s press conference, Representative Manny Guzman stated, “Reading’s best days are ahead of us. This economic program is going to be the platform and opportunity that we have to become the next Allentown or Lancaster, and we’re going to be able to do that right here in Reading. I can’t wait to be a part of writing that next chapter with you all.”

Senator Judy Schwank also expressed her support at Tuesday’s press conference, “We still have so many things that we have to do, but this will be a foundational tool if we can take advantage of it and position ourselves to be able to do this and do it well. I truly believe that it will be a game changer for Reading.”

The CRIZ Working Group will convene regularly to address key issues, review project proposals, and provide recommendations to city officials. The collaborative efforts of this diverse group are expected to enhance transparency, foster community engagement, and drive sustainable development in the designated CRIZ zones.

The City of Reading invites residents, business owners, and community members to stay informed about the CRIZ Working Group’s progress and participate in upcoming community engagement initiatives.
