by Animal Rescue League of Berks County
Hundreds of pets in the four-state area will be looking for homes for the holidays as part of Brandywine Valley SPCA’s (BVSPCA) December Mega Adoption Event® in partnership with Petco Love, BOBS from Skechers®, and Discover. The Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) is one of nine regional participating shelters joining the winter event to be held at all BVSPCA locations and other regional participating shelters on Dec. 9 and 10, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens at all participating shelters will be available for just $35 adoption fees throughout the event.
“Shelters nationwide have faced significant challenges this year,” pointed out José Joel Delgado-Rivera, ARL’s Chief Communications Officer. “The combination of high admission rates and low adoption numbers has made events like this crucial in widening the exposure of these pets to potential adopters. This increased visibility often results in a second chance and a loving home for many of them. Currently, ARL has 78 cats, 46 kittens, and 18 dogs available for adoption.”
“Our Megas are an amazing experience, to see so many pets who have lost everything be chosen by folks who are eager to give them a new life full of love,” said Adam Lamb, BVSPCA CEO. “By bringing this Mega Adoption Event into our campuses and into the shelters of our partners, we are looking to save more lives, reach more local adopters, and open space to more animals in need in our region and beyond.”
“The energy and excitement at Mega Adoption events are incredible, because, by the end of the day, the lives of so many pets and people are about to change and all for the better. We’re so excited to spread the excitement across participating locations to reach even more families ready to adopt,” said Petco Love President, Susanne Kogut. “Shelter workers and volunteers work tirelessly to save these pets – and the feeling they get when the pets find loving homes fuels their passion to continue their lifesaving mission.”
The Mega Adoption event will be held at the ARL, all BVSPCA locations, and at shelters participating in the Mega Adoption Event including ACCT Philly, Animal Adoption Center (AAC), Animal Care Shelter for Kent County, BARCS, Faithful Friends Animal Society, Homeward Bound Pet Adoption Center, Humane Society of Harrisburg Area, South Jersey Regional Animal Shelter, and Montgomery County Animal Shelter (TX). All participating locations will offer a $35 adoption fee for any puppy, kitten, dog, or cat.
All adopters must go through the ARL’s regular procedures to adopt, including the completion of an adoption profile and speaking with an adoption counselor to ensure that the pet they select is a good match for their home, family, and lifestyle.
Adopters are also encouraged to bring their family members and other house dogs to meet the pet they are interested in before completing the adoption. Dog adopters will also want to bring cash or a check for a $7.20 dog license, which is required at the time of adoption under PA law. Adopters will also want to bring a cat carrier (or they can purchase one from the ARL for $5) and a dog collar and leash (or they can purchase one from the ARL).

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is a charitable 501c3 organization caring for nearly 5,000 animals each year to help them find second chances in a new home, or to help reunite them with their grateful owners. For over 70 years, the organization has worked tirelessly to care for the sick, treat the injured, comfort the unwanted, and protect the abused. Whether helping people in need keep their pets through surrender prevention programs, offering low-cost veterinary services and clinics, as well as outreach and education events throughout the county, the ARL’s work goes far beyond the walls of the shelter.
Founded in 1929, the Brandywine Valley SPCA is the first open-admission no-kill shelter in Pennsylvania and Delaware. In 2022, the BVSPCA cared for more than 18,000 lost, stray, owner-surrendered, and abused and neglected animals while achieving a 95% live release rate. The BVSPCA provides animal protective services for Chester County and much of Delaware County in Pennsylvania, and it holds a five-year contract with the Delaware Office of Animal Welfare to provide state-wide animal services. Animals are placed through five adoption centers: Dover Campus, Georgetown Campus, New Castle Campus, West Chester Campus, and Plymouth Meeting PetSmart Everyday Adoption Center. In addition, the BVSPCA provides families with safety net and low-cost veterinary services at its four Animal Health Centers in Malvern, New Castle, Dover, and Georgetown. The BVSPCA also operates the Animal Rescue Center (ARC), a facility dedicated to helping animals with additional needs prior to being ready for adoption, such as cruelty cases, disaster victims, and infants. bvspca.org.
