During the evening on Wednesday, May 1, Caron Treatment Centers, a leading, internationally recognized nonprofit dedicated to transforming the lives of individuals, families, and communities through addiction and behavioral healthcare treatment, research, prevention, and addiction medicine education, honored Jim Boscov with the Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence during a ceremony at the Reading DoubleTree Hotel. Customers Bank was also recognized with the 2024 Partner in Recovery Award.

The Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence is presented annually to an individual or couple who, in the estimation of Caron’s Board of Trustees, demonstrates the same spirit of caring and compassion exemplified by Caron’s founders, Dick and Catherine Caron. Funds raised during the 34th annual Richard J. Caron Award of Excellence Celebration benefit Caron’s mission, providing quality and lifesaving addiction and mental health treatment, education, and prevention services to thousands of individuals and families.

“Jim stands as a pillar of our community; his unwavering commitment and genuine compassion, coupled with his tireless contributions to the lives of so many, has made a significant impact throughout Berks County,” said John Driscoll, CEO of Caron Treatment Centers. “Jim and the Boscov’s community have been advocates and supporters of substance use prevention, education, and recovery for decades. Not only are we grateful for his ongoing support, we’re honored to recognize him as our Richard J. Caron Awardee.”

Headquartered in Reading, PA, Jim Boscov serves as the Chairman and CEO of Boscov’s, America’s largest family-owned department store, and is the third generation of the Boscov family leading the company—overseeing its 48 stores in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, Connecticut, Delaware, Ohio, and Rhode Island.

Boscov has not only made an extensive impact on the retail industry but on Berks County, currently serving on the board of Caron Treatment Centers and Tower Health and previously serving on the boards of the Berks County Community Foundation, Berks County United Way, Alvernia University, and the South Mountain YMCA, among many other charitable organizations throughout his tenure.

At the event, Berks County-based Customers Bank will also be honored with the 2024 Partner in Recovery Award for its generous and ongoing support of Caron, as well as its invaluable volunteer leadership.

Last year, Caron provided more than $5 million in financial assistance for individuals seeking treatment services.

The event’s Honorary Chairs are Thomas F. Flynn, PhD, and Joanne M. Judge, Esq. The Event Committee Co-Chairs are Andi Funk and Kathleen D. Herbein. Presenting sponsor is Customers Bank.
