Exeter Woman Represents Berks in the Fight Against Blood Cancer

Exeter Township resident Tara Lawlor has been nominated to be a Visionary of the Year for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (LLS). Currently, there are 14 nominees hailing from across the United States. As part of her efforts as a Visionary, Lawlor is striving to reach a fundraising goal that would allow her to get a grant after her father and earmark it for multiple myeloma research.

“As a physician, I have had the honor of caring for many patients with leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. It has been deeply humbling to play a role in their care and be part of their personal journey. I have been inspired by their positivity, strength, and courage. But cancer has also impacted me and my family on a more intimate level,” said Lawlor.

In 2003, she became a life-saving bone marrow donor through a donor registry. She also served as her father’s medical advocate throughout his multiple myeloma diagnosis and is herself a colon cancer survivor.

Tara is passionate about participating as a Visionary in supporting the fight for a cure. “My personal and professional experiences over the last 20 years give me a unique perspective and renewed purpose. This year, as a Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s (LLS) Visionaries of the Year nominee, I am working to make an impact for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s mission to fight blood cancers. My goal is to raise valuable funds benefiting innovative research that can lead to breakthroughs in immunotherapy, genomics, and personalized medicine. These funds allow direct access to care, education, and support for blood cancer patients and families and advocacy at the governmental level.”

Tara Lawlor currently works in private dermatology practice in Reading, PA. She lives in Exeter Township with her husband and four children. You can read more about Tara’s story and support her efforts by visiting her Visionary of the Year campaign website. The Visionary of the Year Campaign ends June 6, 2024.
