Reading District Libraries Partner with ARL of Berks County for 2nd Annual “Pages for Pets” Program

by Reading District Libraries

This summer, Berks County readers are challenged to help one lucky shelter pet find a forever home by simply reading books. Pages for Pets is a library initiative aimed at sponsoring the adoption fee of a shelter pet by encouraging readers to work towards a county-wide goal of 500,000 minutes.

This event is hosted by Reading District Libraries in collaboration with the Animal Rescue League of Berks County and will run concurrently with the annual library summer learning program.

Readers from across Berks will have from June 17 until July 26 to successfully read a combined total of 500,000 minutes. Every minute counts towards the financial sponsorship of a pet’s adoption at the Animal Rescue League.

The Animal Rescue League will announce which pet found their forever home thanks to readers’ efforts on July 29.

Readers of all ages are welcome to join the challenge and are free to read whatever they choose, including novels, eBooks, audiobooks, comics and graphic novels, newspapers, and more.

“Last year, we had an overwhelming response from adults who also wanted to help a pet get adopted. Pages for Pets can help give adults that push they need to make time to read a book or pursue other ways they can help the Animal Rescue League,” said Marissa Guidara, youth services district consultant for Reading District Libraries, which is financially sponsoring the adoption.

After successfully reaching the reading goal last summer, the Animal Rescue League of Berks County announced that Agent 007, a senior black cat, was the pet whose adoption fees were sponsored by the readers’ efforts. He was adopted shortly after the announcement.

In addition to Pages for Pets, each of the 25 library locations in Berks County will be hosting their own summer learning programs, with a full schedule of free activities and programs for children, teens, and adults.
