From Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge
Widoktadwen Center for Native Knowledge invites the community to celebrate Native American winter traditions at its inaugural Winter Solstice Gathering & Feast on Sunday, Dec. 21, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the social hall of Zion Spies Lutheran Church, 310 Spies Church Road, Reading.
The Winter Solstice is a sacred season in many Indigenous cultures, marked by reflection and the sharing of traditional stories only told in the winter. The gathering aims to bring the community together to honor these traditions through food, storytelling, and craft.
The event itinerary includes:
- Potluck feast: A community meal beginning at 11 a.m. Attendees are encouraged to sign up online to bring a dish to share.
- Winter storytelling: Sharing of traditional Native American stories reserved for the winter months. Storytelling begins at noon.
- Community giveaway: A traditional practice honoring the spirit of the season. Guests are welcome to bring a small gift to add to the giveaway table.
- Monthly beading circle: The afternoon will conclude with a beading circle beginning at 1 p.m. Attendees are invited to bring their own craft projects, though limited supplies will be available on-site.
This event is free to attend and open to the public. Potluck contributions are encouraged. Widoktadwen’s Cultural Resource Center & Library on site will be open for guests to enjoy during the event.
