Rep. David Maloney (R-Berks) announced on Thursday, Dec. 18, that the Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) has approved a $143,703 grant for the Berks County Conservation District’s stream restoration project to alleviate traffic safety and environmental issues on Oysterdale Road in Pike Township.

“Oysterville Creek and adjacent wetlands are severely threatened due to an unnamed tributary that had diverted from its original flow path approximately 20 years ago,” Maloney said. “Oysterdale Road experiences flooding due to the diverted flow, creating hazardous conditions for traffic that has significantly increased in recent years.”

Oysterville Creek flows to Manatawny Creek, located downstream from the Schuylkill River. The entire Schuylkill River tributary supplies water to approximately 1.7 million residents of Philadelphia and the surrounding suburban communities. The restoration project will help prevent harmful erosion, protecting local drinking water and wildlife habitats.

“This stream restoration project will help restore the ecological health of Oysterville Creek and local wetlands,” Maloney said. “The project will coincide with the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation’s work currently underway to replace a series of culverts along the adjacent section of Oysterdale Road, including the culvert that will receive flow from the restored tributary.”

The CFA was established in 2004 as an independent agency of the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development (DCED) to administer the Commonwealth’s economic stimulus packages.
