The Berks County Parks and Recreation Department continues to present programs promoting nature, history, and outdoor activity throughout the month of January 2026.

Saturday, Jan. 3 | Winter Wellness Walk | 9 a.m. @ Heritage Center
Join the parks’ staff as they get out on the Union Canal Trail to enjoy an hour-long brisk walk with like-minded friends.
Free. | Registration is suggested.

Saturday, Jan. 3 | First Full Moon Hike | 5:30 p.m. @ Heritage Center
Walk the Union Canal Trail on the evening of the full moon. They’ll be outside the entire time, so dress warm.
Free. | Registration is required.

Saturday, Jan. 10 | Owl Prowl | 6 p.m. @ Heritage Center
Enjoy a moonlit stroll on the Union Canal Trail while learning about owls. They’ll meet inside to discuss these nighttime birds of prey, their nesting habits, and their impacts on the environment before heading out on the trail.

Tuesday, Jan. 13 | Trail Tales | 10 a.m. @ Heritage Center
Get wrapped up in a trail tale and discover plants and animal friends in our parks. Geared towards children ages 3 to 5.

Wednesday, Jan. 14 | Junk Journaling – Part 1 | 6 p.m. @ Heritage Center
Join them for this workshop series to learn the art of junk journaling. Limited amounts of art materials are provided, but please bring your own book and any supplies you would like to include in your journal.
Free. | Registration is required.

Saturday, Jan. 24 | Snowshoeing Pennsylvania Trails | 2 p.m. @ Bethel Appalachian Trail: Route 501 Parking Lot of the AT, Lancaster Ave., Bethel, PA (40.512678, -76.344475)
Join the Blue Mountain Eagle Climbing Club and the Berks County Parks and Recreation Department in an out-and-back snowshoe adventure on the Appalachian Trail. BMECC and the parks’ staff will share tips, tricks, and equipment notes on snowshoeing on Pennsylvania trails during winter. Bring your own snowshoes or reserve a pair ahead of time. In the event of a lack of adequate snowpack, they’ll hike on foot without snowshoes. The program is free. | Registration is required (with or without snowshoe reservations).
