While the holidays bring joy and gifts, unfortunately, they can also lead to an increase in theft. State Farm recently reviewed homeowner theft claims from 2023 to 2025 and found that January consistently sees the biggest jump — about 11% higher than other months. This isn’t too surprising since many homes are filled with new, valuable items right after the holiday season.
Protect Your Home This New Year
State Farm recommends taking these steps to safeguard your home and belongings:
- Create a home inventory: Make a detailed list of your possessions. You can write it down or use your smartphone to take photos or videos. This will help you quickly file a claim if something happens.
- Review your insurance coverage: Check your policy limits and make sure you have enough protection, especially if you received valuable gifts or added new items to your home. Talk to your State Farm agent if you’re unsure.
- Make your home less attractive to thieves:
- Install a home security system with cameras — you may even get insurance discounts.
- Put up security signs or stickers to warn potential burglars.
- Use motion-activated exterior lighting around doors and windows to surprise anyone who tries to sneak in. Make sure lights are out of reach so bulbs can’t be easily removed.
- Always lock all doors and windows.
- Consider a Personal Articles Policy (PAP) for extra coverage on high-value items like jewelry, furs, and collectibles.
Taking these precautions can help protect your home and give you peace of mind during the new year.
