Community Forum: Reimagining the Gateway Bridge

From Spotlight PA Berks County

Join Spotlight PA Berks County for a virtual community forum entitled “Reimagining the Gateway Bridge” on Thursday, March 19, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., via Zoom.

The Schuylkill River Greenways is launching a project to reimagine the bridge where hundreds of pedestrians and bicyclists travel between Reading and West Reading. The 400-foot span crosses the river from Riverfront Park in Reading to West Reading. Though still functional, the bridge is lined with steel walls that limit views of the river and are not an attractive point of entry to either community.

This project provides an opportunity to combine the utility of a bike and pedestrian trail with the beauty and creativity of an extraordinary public art project, creating a welcoming entrance to both communities.

The bridge, owned by Berks County and used under a trail easement held by Greenways, is a critical link to the Schuylkill River Trail. Partnering with Barrio Alegría, the Greenways is asking the public to help redesign the Gateway Bridge. The designs for the bridge may include new lighting, opening views of the river, murals from local artists, and structural changes that will change the sense of place in both communities.
