From City of Reading
The City of Reading’s Welcome Sign project at the intersection of Route 422 and Penn Street/Penn Avenue has been recognized as a 2026 Top Project by Lehigh Valley Business during the Real Estate & Development Summit and Top Projects ceremony held on Wednesday, March 11, at DeSales University.
Representing the city at the ceremony were Mayor Eddie Morán, Capital Projects Manager David Anspach III, and Managing Director Jack Gombach, who accepted the award on behalf of the City of Reading.
The 100-square-foot Welcome Sign, completed on Nov. 14, 2025, stands along one of the primary gateways into the city. The project followed a 28-month process after an accident destroyed the original sign along the Route 422 bypass in 2023. Although the site fell within a right-of-way managed by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation and under the jurisdiction of West Reading Borough, the City of Reading worked with regional partners to secure approval to replace the sign and bring the project to completion.
“Projects like this remind us that sometimes the smallest landmarks can carry the biggest meaning for a community,” said Mayor Morán. “What began as an unfortunate accident became an opportunity to work with partners across municipal, county, and state levels to ensure that everyone entering Reading is greeted with a sign that reflects our pride in the city and our commitment to welcoming all who come here.”
The project was completed with support from several partners, including West Reading Borough, Berks County, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, Met-Ed, and Allstate, along with the leadership of Mayor Morán and the support of Reading City Council.
In addition to the city’s recognition, another project within Reading city limits was honored during the ceremony. The Glidden Site Redevelopment received a Top Deals award, recognizing the work of the Berks County Industrial Development Authority (Berks IDA), NAI Keystone, and Shuman Development Group.
