The Spayd’s Company, one of Berks County’s most respected family‑owned landscaping, outdoor environments, pool, and construction businesses, will celebrate its 50th anniversary with an open house on Thursday, April 16, honoring five decades of hard work, innovation, and unwavering family commitment.
What began in 1976 as Mary Spayd’s Greenhouse, a humble single‑greenhouse operation built from salvaged glass panels and a passion for organic gardening, has grown into a dynamic, multi‑division company recognized for exceptional quality, craftsmanship, innovative solutions, and customer-focused service.
A half‑century rooted in family
The Spayd story began long before the company name existed. In the mid‑1970s, Mary and Edwin “Russ” Spayd rebuilt an old free greenhouse in their backyard to grow vegetables for their family. Soon, neighbors began stopping by to buy plants, and by 1976, the first version of the business was born.
“As children, we sold vegetables door‑to‑door in baskets to help the family,” recalled Missy Spayd Kauffman, Partner at The Spayd’s Company. “Every quarter mattered. We never imagined it would become a full‑time business.”
Through the years, each of the Spayd children contributed to the business, transforming the greenhouse from a seasonal venture into a year‑round operation through innovation and determination. Greenhouses were added, new product lines were introduced, and the family’s collective work ethic became the backbone of the business.
Thriving today through generational leadership
The Spayd’s Company now offers full‑service landscaping, outdoor environments, pool, and construction divisions. Throughout every evolution, the family emphasis has never wavered.
“The family component remains the driving force of our business,” Betsy Spayd-Rothenberger, Partner at The Spayd’s Company, shared. “We’ve grown not just through family leadership but through employees who have become like family, many with 20-35 years of dedication and have grown alongside us.”
That culture extends beyond leadership. Employees point to a collaborative, hands-on environment that drives both quality and satisfaction. “We care about the client’s needs and the quality of the process and the work performed,” noted Jim Joyce, Design/Sales at The Spayd’s Company.
Celebrating growth, resilience, and the future
Over five decades, The Spayd’s Company has weathered economic challenges, industry shifts, and even global events such as the COVID‑19 era. Through each phase, adaptability and the family’s belief in hard work guided the way.
“There are no shortcuts to success,” Mike Spayd, Partner at The Spayd’s Company, said. “To not grow is the beginning of decline. We’ve always believed in adapting and evolving.”
The company’s expansion into in-house pool and construction divisions marked a significant milestone, alongside its successful transition from one generation of leadership to the next.
Clients continue to choose The Spayd’s Company for its reputation and results. “We stand behind our work with quality and honest workmanship,” said Max Spayd, Partner at The Spayd’s Company. “By consistently delivering excellent products, services, and customer experiences, we have built lasting client loyalty.”
Looking ahead
As the next generation begins entering the business, The Spayd’s Company is focused on continued innovation and future expansion, including potential growth beyond Pennsylvania.
“Our goal is to equip the next generation with the tools and knowledge to carry this business forward for the next 50 years,” said Mike Spayd.
