Free ‘Food as Medicine Lunch & Learn Series’ Connects Nutrition, Chronic Disease Management, and Everyday Living

Reading Hospital is introducing a new Food as Medicine Lunch & Learn Series, offering patients and community members a practical, approachable way to understand how everyday food choices can directly impact chronic conditions, energy levels, and long-term health.

The first event will take place on Friday, April 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., at Reading Hospital Rehabilitation at Wyomissing, located at 2802 Papermill Road in Wyomissing.

Lunch will be provided, and the program is free to attend. Space is limited, and registration is required.

The program, supported by the Reading Hospital Foundation, is designed for individuals looking to take a more active role in their health, particularly those managing or at risk for conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, or inflammation. It will blend expert guidance with real-world tips in a relaxed, small-group setting.

Unlike traditional lectures, this interactive Lunch & Learn replaces a formal presentation with table-side conversations. Attendees will sit with medical residents and healthcare professionals, creating an opportunity for personalized discussion, questions, and practical advice tailored to everyday routines.

“Many people know they should eat healthier but aren’t sure what that actually looks like day to day,” said Dr. Charles F. Barbera, president and CEO of Reading Hospital. “This program breaks it down into simple, realistic choices people can make immediately without giving up flavor, satisfaction, or convenience.”

A key highlight of the event is a thoughtfully curated Spring Mediterranean-inspired meal, designed by the hospital’s Nutrition Department to demonstrate how nutrient-dense, anti-inflammatory foods can be both accessible and enjoyable. The menu includes watermelon salad and salmon, among several other items.

Each menu selection reflects principles of balanced nutrition, portion awareness, and ingredient quality, which will give attendees a clear, tangible example of how to build meals that support health goals without sacrificing taste.
