Izzy Rivera, a 9-year-old who resides in the Berks County area, has been enjoying her life as a university athlete on the Alvernia Women’s Lacrosse Team. As the Golden Wolves enter conference play in April with an away opener against Albright College, the team is enjoying its time with teammate Izzy Rivera. “I am so excited to be with the lacrosse girls,” Izzy Rivera said.
For a recap, Izzy Rivera is one of the brightest, most optimistic souls you will ever meet. Her spirit, laugh, and smile are contagious, lighting up any room she walks into. Izzy is the perfect example of courage, confidence, and power.

Izzy has gone through many health complications throughout her life. At 6 months old, she was diagnosed with Anomalous Left Coronary Artery from the Pulmonary Artery (ALCAPA). She most recently suffered from Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus (MRSA), a blood infection that caused Endocarditis to develop. Endocarditis is an infection of the inner heart lining caused by her MRSA diagnosis.
Izzy’s family and Alvernia partnered with Team Impact, a nonprofit organization that connects children with health complications with collegiate teams. Earlier this year, Izzy had a signing day to officially become an Alvernia student lacrosse player, marking the start of her two-year term with the women’s team. Since then, Izzy has participated in multiple activities with the team, including a women’s lacrosse Christmas party, where the girls had a white elephant gift exchange, food, and party games. Izzy’s grandfather provided the team with a home-cooked meal for team dinner, where Izzy ate with the girls and played games.
Izzy was assigned a locker in the Alvernia locker room and wears jersey number 17. Dressed up in her uniform, Izzy got pictures taken for media day to celebrate her spot on the team. Izzy has also attended multiple games and practices to cheer her teammates on the sidelines. “I am having super-duper fun. My favorite thing is to cheer during their games,” Izzy Rivera said.

When asked if she was starting to enjoy lacrosse as a sport itself, Izzy stated, “I like watching lacrosse. I like to watch them run and make a goal!” As the lacrosse teams enter conference play and finish off their season next month, the girls are grateful for the opportunity to have Izzy on the team. It has given them a new perspective and something else to play for.
Izzy’s story and personality are inspiring and remind the world to be appreciative for what they are given. “If Izzy can do it, I can,” Kelly Rivera said.
