The community is invited to attend Reading Hospital’s first Bike Smart Safety Fest on Saturday, May 16, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Reading Area Community College, 30 S. Front St., Reading, in Parking Lots A and C near Yocum Library.
The free event is hosted in partnership with Commute PA to promote bike safety and accident prevention. Children can bring their bicycles and ride through a fun bike rodeo course designed to build confidence and promote safety skills. All participants must wear helmets while riding. A limited number of helmets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis for participants who do not have their own.
In addition to the course, children can participate in additional activities, such as bike helmet decorating, a bike safety check, and sidewalk chalk. Families can also enjoy music and light refreshments and visit information tables to learn more about the services provided by Pennsylvania State Police Troop L, City of Reading Department of Fire & Rescue Services and Public Works, and Reading Hospital trauma and community wellness departments.
“One of Tower Health’s top priorities is to prevent injuries before they happen,” said Desha Dickson, vice president of community wellness at Tower Health. “By helping children and families understand the importance of bicycle safety, we can make our communities safer for everyone.”
Between June 1 and Dec. 31, 2025, Reading Hospital’s emergency department and trauma center treated 56 patients, including a 4-year-old child, for traditional bicycle-related injuries. During the same time, 52 patients were treated for e-bike-related injuries. Safe Kids Worldwide reports that nearly 50 children visit emergency departments every hour for injuries related to bikes, scooters, skates, or skateboards.
“Bike riding is a healthy activity for families to enjoy together,” said Jennifer Barney, trauma prevention coordinator at Reading Hospital. “Learning safety skills at any age can provide confidence and encourage safe rides for years to come.”
The Bike Smart Safety Fest is open to all community members and families, and registration is not required. Free parking is available at 30. S. Front St., Parking Lot A.
