Railroad enthusiasts, history buffs, photographers, and families alike will have a rare opportunity to witness one of America’s greatest engineering marvels when Union Pacific Railroad’s Big Boy No. 4014 travels through Berks County on July 2 and July 7.

The world’s largest steam locomotive and the only operational example of the legendary Big Boy class will make its way through Berks County as part of Union Pacific’s Heritage Program. Opportunities to see Big Boy 4014 are exceptionally rare, and thousands of spectators are expected at viewing locations along its route.

On Thursday, July 2, Big Boy 4014 is expected to journey through Berks County between 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. as it travels from Jim Thorpe to King of Prussia. The visit includes a unique whistle stop, making the appearance even more special for rail fans.

Remarkably, Big Boy 4014 will make a second trip through Berks County on the morning of Tuesday, July 7, providing another opportunity to view the locomotive as it passes through the City of Reading and surrounding communities. Recommended viewing locations include Schlegel Park in Reading, the area near Dosie Dough in Wyomissing, and Heritage Park in Sinking Spring.

Built in 1941, Big Boy 4014 is one of only 25 Big Boy locomotives ever constructed. It was designed to haul heavy freight across the steep grades of the American West, and weighs approximately 1.2 million pounds, stretches 132 feet in length, and generates about 6,000 horsepower. After retiring from regular service in 1961, the locomotive spent decades on display before undergoing an extensive restoration and returning to operation in 2019.

“For Berks County, Big Boy’s visit carries special significance,” said Heather Zimmerman, President and CEO of Experience Reading & Berks County. “From the Reading Company to the industries that developed along our local rail corridors, rail transportation helped drive the economic growth that shaped our communities, industries, and identity. Big Boy 4014’s passage through Berks County offers a rare chance to celebrate our railroad legacy and the innovation that fueled America’s growth.”

The Big Boy locomotives were built during the golden age of American railroading and became symbols of American engineering excellence and industrial strength. Today, only eight Big Boy locomotives remain, and No. 4014 is the only one operating anywhere in the world.

Spectators are encouraged to arrive early, follow all railroad safety guidelines, and help preserve the memory of this historic occasion by photographing and sharing their experiences.
