Tom Schaeffer’s Camping and Travel Center is sponsoring adoptions at the Animal Rescue League of Berks County (ARL) in a weekend-long event starting on Friday, Aug. 14, and continuing through Sunday, Aug. 16, in memory of Tom Schaeffer. During the event, all pets over six months of age will be free to adopt.

Bringing a new family member into a home takes time and careful consideration, so potential adopters should be prepared to complete an adoption profile and meet with a counselor to ensure that the pet they select is a good match for their home, family, and lifestyle.

Adopters are encouraged to bring their family members to meet their new pet at the time of adoption. Dog adopters should bring their resident dogs to ensure a good match and be prepared to pay $11.30 for a dog license, which is required at the time of adoption under PA law. They should also bring a dog collar and leash (or they can purchase one from the ARL). Cat adopters should bring a cat carrier (or they can purchase one from the ARL for $5.00).

The ARL will be open on Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., and on Saturday and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; no appointments are necessary. A virtual “line” is set up at berksarl.org/hello, where guests can check-in when they arrive at the shelter. All guests will be able to check their place in line and be notified when it’s their turn to work with an adoption counselor. Extended wait times during sponsored adoption events are expected.

About the Animal Rescue League of Berks County

The Animal Rescue League of Berks County is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization caring for nearly 5,000 animals each year to help them find second chances in a new home, or to help reunite them with their grateful owners. For over 70 years, the organization has worked tirelessly to care for the sick, treat the injured, comfort the unwanted, and protect the abused. Whether helping people in need keep their pets through surrender prevention programs, offering low-cost veterinary services and clinics, as well as outreach and education events throughout the county, the ARL’s work goes far beyond the walls of the shelter.
